Entre endoctrinement familial et regard décalé sur les moeurs et événements de son époque, le narrateur traverse l'histoire du XXe siècle au rythme d'anecdotes et de digressions burlesques qui révèlent toute l'ambiguïté et l'affirmation de la culture belge.
