Une catastrophe écologique provoquée par la multinationale Domidion lors de la construction d'un oléoduc élimine toute forme de vie dans l'océan près de Samaritan Bay, sur la côte de Colombie-Britannique, et fait des victimes parmi les autochtones de la réserve voisine qui jadis accueillait la migration annuelle des tortues, des oiseaux et des touristes.
Les deux personnages principaux du roman sont les responsables de cette catastrophe et vont chercher leur rédemption, chacun à sa manière.
Le chercheur Gabriel Quinn, scientifique génial qui a mis au point le défoliant mortel GreenSweep, puis lutté contre sa mise en vente, dévoré de culpabilité, vient s'installer secrètement dans la réserve polluée, d'où est originaire sa propre mère, dans l'intention de se suicider. Il y rencontre des survivants qui vont lui redonner goût à la vie : Mara Reid, peintre ayant grandi sur la réserve, dont la sexualité décomplexée initiera Gabriel ; Nicholas Crisp, sage et coloré doyen des lieux ; Sonny, jeune maître des tortues, collectionneur d'objets vomis par la marée.
Dorian Asher, le PDG de Domidion, narcissique et attachant à la fois, ne lit rien, n'aime pas les Arts, est même indifférent à la procédure de divorce instruite par sa femme. Il tente d'oublier un nouveau scandale écologique qui s'annonce (cette fois-ci dans une rivière de l'Alberta) en fuyant dans de luxueux hôtels, savourant sa solitude et avec pour unique obsession le choix de sa nouvelle montre... Gabriel et Dorian ne se reverront pas mais, liés par le désastre, ils connaîtront des sorts inattendus.
